Camp Read A Lot

We are beginning our Camp Read a Lot again.
This is something I started last year and you can read all about it here.

I dug out our list from last year, mostly so I wouldn't repeat any books.
These are the books I read to my 4 grandchildren during last summer's camp.

Camp Read A Lot 2012

1. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
2.  Corduroy
3.  The Story of Ferdinand
4.  The Runaway Bunny
5.  Make Way for Ducklings
6.  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
7.  If You Give A Mouse A Cookie
8.  Doctor De Soto
9.  Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
10.  Goodnight Moon
11.  Alpha Oops! The Day Z Went First
12.  Pretty Salma, A Little Red Riding Hood Story from Africa
13.  Madeline
14.  Thunder Cake
15.  On A Summer Day
16.  Swimmy
17.  Caps For Sale
18.  Tikki Tikki Tembo
                          19. Zomo The Rabbit, A Trickster Tale from West Africa
 20.  The Snowy Day
  21.  Chicken Little
22.  The Three Bears
23.  Madeline's Rescue
24.  Mother Goose Numbers On The Loose
25.  Where the RIver Begins

I wish I had the grand total for how many they read last year, but I didn't keep that, it was well over 100 books, I know that for sure.

This year we began with a poem.

I thought it would be fun to memorize a few little poems.
The first one I choose is The Purple Cow.
I'm sure you all know it.

I never saw a purple cow,

I never hope to see one.
But I can tell you anyhow
I'd rather see than be one!

After successfully learning it, you can see our camp snack, a Purple Cow.
{grape pop and ice cream}
YUM

Cooper loves his.
{Don't you love the sunscreen?  We are serious about sunscreen here :-) }

Elizabeth too!

One of our first books was
Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss

They loved playing with the oobleck.

When pressure is applied it is a solid.

No pressure and it becomes a liquid.
It is a non Newtonian substance.
{a substance that exhibits 2 properties at the same time}
{even I learned something this time, I've never heard of a non Newtonian substance before}

It was a lot of fun to play with and GREAT for outside.
We made a big mess:-)
It is made with cornstarch and water, that's it.

My list so far:

1.  The Gruffalo's Child
2.  Petunia
3.  Bartholomew and the Oobleck
4.  Curious George
5.  Flicka, RIcka, and Dicka and the Strawberries
6.  The Umbrella by Jan Brett
7.  Clifford, The Big Red Dog
8.The Star Spangled Banner
9.  The Little Train by Lois Lenski
10.  Mossy by Jan Brett

The kids have been reading up a storm, and have earned lots of prizes.
I have been pretty bad with activities this year ~ it's been a hectic summer.
We have spent lots of time in the pool, and we just returned from a week at our cabin.
We had a great time and read lots of books about bears at the cabin!

So, even though I haven't been a good blogger about our reading, we are reading!
And that's what it's all about after all.

I didn't know what a nonNewtonian substance was either. I pretty much tossed out all science knowledge the minute I didn't need it to make room in my head for stuff like poetry.

Therefore, of course, I loved your introduction.

Is Claire able to join you, or is she still a bit too shy? I'll bet she loves her new forever family!

Oh, I remember reading the kidlets "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"!!...and several others you mentioned, too, Sue. What a great way to entertain them & help them enjoy reading at the same time.

Our kids made some sort of gooey substance that was very similar...loads of FUN!

To answer your question about my patriotic M&M's...I didn't buy them in that red/white/blue combination. Had to do it myself, as I've never seen them like that. I had TONS of red from Christmas & Valentines Day & was surprised that they are different shades of red!

Hugs,
Rett

Looks like the kids are enjoying camp read a lot. I should try that stuff with my kids. Wonder how they would like it?! I know they wouldn't go for the purple cow drink. What fun and what memories.
